We are often asked 'What should I feed my puppy?' or 'What food would you recommend', which is a very good question! There are many dog foods out there that are NOT what you should feed your puppy, and while you may think all pet companies have your pet's best interest in mind, it is shocking for some when you realize what some of these pet food brands contain.
We are currently feed our adults and also plan to feed our puppies Purina Pro Plan. The adults are on Pro Plan Sport 30/20 (30% protein and 20% fat) or Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon and Rice Formula. Our puppies will be on Pro Plan Large Breed Focus. We made this change after doing alot of research and talking with many other breeders that love this food.
Unfortunately, there has been quite a few issues recently with Golden Retrievers getting DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) due to the food they have been eating being taurine deficent. The different studies that have been done are showing that the food the dogs are eating is what was causing this DCM. After switching to a different food that was researched and nutritionally balanced many of these dogs were able to recover.
We recommend staying away from all grain free and especially foods that are high in legumes (potatoes, peas etc).
Purina is WSAVA approved and the ingredients are actively researched in regards to the taurine problem in order to prevent DCM as well as the ingredients are tested and approved. We are happy to provide you with more information regarding this food if you have any questions or in regards to the nutritional taurine deficient problem.
All of these foods mentioned above can be purchased on www.chewy.com, with very reasonable prices
and Free Shipping on orders over $49.
We also occasionally add raw chicken, glucosamine, salmon oil and probiotics to our dogs diet for strong & clean teeth, healthy joints, and shiny coats. The dogs also get their teeth brushed to keep clean but the bones helps keep down plaque and they LOVE them! :)
